Lieutenant Colonel R. (Ross) Cossar - Bio |
|
| Quite simply, LCol Ross Cossar has shown up. For 23 years he has served the Regiment and the Canadian Forces in a variety of roles that have included working part time Class A, full time Class B and overseas deployments on Class C service. In fact even when serving part-time, he has attended approximately 99% of available training. |
| Despite a lack of family military heritage, he has long had a zeal for military culture and service. Having realized that the sea cadet corps was not meeting his military expectations, his life with this Regiment started when he joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps here in this armoury in 1979. Weekend exercises put the hook into him and fueled his passions for military history as well. After wandering the proverbial wilderness as a young adult he found himself back in Peterborough where he sought out the only army he knew. This led him into the Cadet Instructor List and |
| becoming an officer with the army cadets. When after a couple of years it had become quite apparent that the junior officers of this Regiment were getting more military satisfaction than he was, then Lt Cossar applied to transfer over. His official start date in this Regiment was September 1st 1989. Over the years he led infantry platoons and companies on training exercises in locations across Canada and from above the Arctic Circle to swamps in Florida. In 2006, as a Major, he deployed to Afghanistan on Task Force 3-06 where he worked in Afghan Security Force development. In 2009, he deployed as the Deputy Commanding Officer (DCO) of the decompression site where our deployed soldiers transition from theatre to home with a few day of briefings and R&R. |
On his return from Afghanistan, LCol Cossar decided to return to school where he has put his full time efforts into the study of military psychology at Trent University. He has just completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours. LCol Cossar has accepted a position in the Master of Social Work graduate program at Carleton University. Like his duties here, it is all about working with soldiers for years to come. |
| LCol Cossar lives in the Norwood area with his wife Lisa and two of their three children. His oldest son, who is married, serves on HMCS Protector in Esquimalt BC. Paratus! |
