I began my military career in "C" Company, The Hast & PER in Port Hope, ON in 1959. I was recruited by my father, WOII Herbert G. Elliston, who was CSM at the time. He joined the Midland Regtiment in 1939, and served overseas with the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders. After the war he returned to the Midland Regiment until it was amalgamated with The Regiment. I joined the Regular Force in 1964 and served until 1998. I will always consider myself a "Plough Jockey".

As I have read from many of the people who have posted on this guest book, my father too was a veteran of WW2 and did not talk much of his service overseas. Unfortunatly he passed away when I was 6 so I never got to ask him of his experiences. My mother, who is still living, has little information and few pictures of his time in europe. His name was Eric True and anyone having any details or information about his time overseas would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at truetNOSPAM@navcanada.ca.

To All military personel, I as a Canadian very much appreciate all the sacrifices you have made during your time of service. Be it peace keeping or during any war I have the utmost resoect for members of the military. Thank you for all you do and have done.

I am currently in Italy working for a Canadian company and will be here November 11, 2002. My plans are to visit Ortano on Rememberance Day to pay my respects. This is a tradition I do wheever I am overseas and near a Canadian cemetary. This year I wish to lay poppies - out of respect - Does anyone know how many of our soldiers are buried in Ortano and how do I get enough poppies to lay at each grave? I will be in Toronto week of Oct 27 and returning to Italy (Rome) week of November 4.

Sincerely

Jeffrey Thomson

Hello all,

I've had a slight change of address since my last entry. I'm now with an Army Cadet Corps in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. For all those who want to keep in touch, here's my new e-mail as well. To those still active in The Regiment, kudos to you and remember that you are a Hasty Pee for life. Keep in touch with your peers as they will probably be the best bunch of guys and girls you will ever know! I am positive of this.

What a great site. I send a huge THANK YOU out to all our Veterans. If it were not for you, I would hate to think what Canada would be like today; the thought sends shivers up my back.
We owe you a great deal & we have given back so little that it shames me. I am working on a
project for our Veterans. But I need the help of the public. Please send me your letters of Thanks to our Veterans, stories, even pictures if you would like. For younger children; they can draw a picture for the Veterans. Also I can use poems or information on any one who has went to War. These items will be entered into a book and when done will be given to groups of our Veterans around Canada. If you would like to snail mail it to send to Kim Shergold Hwy. 17 East R.R.2 Corbeil Ont. Canada
Any information in this book will in time be of Great Value to people looking for certain Family members while doing their Family Tree.
But most of all it will bring a smile on many Veterans faces.
I can not do this with out the help of the Public.
So please find it in your heart to help put a smile on thousands of Canadian War Hero's
Thank YOU!

I am currently doing some research on Pte. H.J. Pringle who was with the H&PE regiment in Italy. I understand that his father William Pringle was also with the H&PE but left the service in 1943. H.J. Pringle was born in Port Colborne and his family was living in Flinton, Ontario when he enlisted. He fought at the Hitler Line in May 1944. He was executed in Avellino, Italy on July 5, 1945 for his involvement in the killing of another Canadian serviceman. I would like to correspond or talk to anyone who has any recollections of Pringle and/or his father. The Padre who interceded on his behalf during the Appeal was B.S. Farrell. I would like to know if B.S. Farrell was with the H&PE Regiment. I have checked the Regimental Diaries in Ottawa and have found no records of the incident. Any help or leads would be much appreciated.

My dad ELTON EDWIN HUBLE died on 30 December 1966 when I was a very young girl. My memories of him include him singing to me a favorite diddy "Kiss Me Good Night Sargent Major" and unfortunately I can only remember part of a poem .. "Up up I go say froggy, until I reach the top, ..." He was a veteran of W.W.II and was injured in England and wounded in Italy. He enlisted at age 20 with the Midland Regt. and later served with the SD&G and then H&PE Regt. Had my father lived, he would now be a great grandfather... his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren want to know more about him. Unfortunately, not everyone's memory is the same and dad never talked much about the war. Anyone with information, please e-mail so we can pass this information down into the family history. Many thanks for all information!!

Hi Wayne. I was in Halifax in 1999 prior to OP ABACUS, and LCol Bailey was already at that current rank. Last I saw him was circa 1990 when he was a captain. I can't remember when he said he was promoted, but still looks the same (perhaps when wearing a beret!)

Well, talk about a small world. There I was at the Nova Scotia International Tattoo, and who comes by? None other than the CO, LCol Skip Simpson! I still remember the day when I walked into the armouries in October of 1984, hair down to my shoulders, and he tells me to "come this way, Suzie!" Well, I don't know if that's what he said, but I sure was an interesting way for a young civvy to join up!
He tells me about this site, and he says that I was one of the Lost Boys! OK, this is what happened to me since Sgt Garvin D.W. left The Regiment in 1989:
Cpl 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, serving in Gagetown, Oka and Cyprus and (even once in Petawawa as incremental staff!) until 1992. The entire time with H Coy. Promoted MCpl in 1990.
MCpl Regimental Headquarters, The Royal Canadian Regiment starting in 1992. While there I did my Small Arms course back in Gagetown and once more to Petawawa to instruct at the battle school.
Accepted UTPNCM in 1995 (23U Inf!) Studied at the University of Western Ontario (http://www.uwo.ca), receiving my BA Honours in German and Philosophy in 1999. Posted back to 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment as a platoon commander in, you guessed it, H Coy! Successfully completed my Advanced Mortar Course in the fall of 2000, and have been OC Mortar Platoon since the early part of 2001.
I'm now married to Laura Garvin (nee Sylvester) of London, Ontario, and have two wonderful children, Nichole (5) and Jennette (2 on July 16th 2002!)
Promoted to my current rank on 1 May 2002. Well, if you're a Hasty P, or even a Royal, drop a line at my email address listed above!

I am the current DCO of the Regiment. I have met and make many friends over the years, it is true of the old saying , "once a Hasty P, always a Hasty P". To all those who have served our Regiment, well done, you have made us the great Regiment we are. Those old "salts", men like "Duffy, Blackie Simpson, Gord Bocock, Bill Acreman, RSM Fox, RSM Buchanan", you will always live on in the hearts of those who have been honoured to serve in the Regiment. To those who have spend but a short time in our Regiment, your welcome to return and renew the comradary, to those thinking of contributing to serving society and your Country come and talk to the Recruiters. My father was in the Hasty Pee and didn't talk much about his time during WWII. It seems to be a common thing through all that I have read here that people that were there didn't want to talk about it. I know no war is good. But to know the things he went through helps to understand him more. The war helped to shape who he was. If anyone knew Frederick Ellis it could tell me more I would really appreciate it. He came from Trenton Ontario and I know he served in Italy. This site is great. Thanks!

But to know the things he went through helps to understand him more. The war helped to shape who he was. If anyone knew Frederick Ellis it could tell me more I would really appreciate it. This site is great. Thanks!

As a member of THE HASTY PEES PIPE BAND 1985-86 I was quite dissapointed that no pics. of the pipe band were displayed on this site. I've visited other regimental sites and enjoyed their pictures (black watch, lorne scots etc.)but nothing of THE HASTY PEES. FUTURE?? I am now a retiree living in the States and playing with an Irish band and firmly believe that past members of this regimental pipe band should at the very least have the regiment acknowledge that they do indeed have a pipe band, and an excellent one at that

Congratulations on hosting a very good site.

My Dad, G. Ray Paulley, served as a Hasty P during WWII. He was, I believe, part of the Administrative platoon in HQ Company. He joined the Regiment immediately after the Ortona battle at the end of 1943, and served with the Regiment through to VE Day. He passed away in 1987.

While I would enjoy hearing from any veteran who remembers my Dad, I also would like to make a contribution to the remaining Hasty P veterans of the War.

Dad left behind a photo album containing some 120 photographs taken while he was training at Valcartier and while he was overseas. My project for this year was to remount the photos, as after 60-odd years the album was literally falling apart. To my surprise, I found that Dad had added captions to the backs of many of the photographs, which until now have remained hidden.

Amongst many photographs of anonymous Hasty P's, the album contains good-quality photographs of the following veterans:

Confirmed members of the Hasty P's:

Lt. King Wain, Victoria, B.C.
Pte. J. W. Madse, Edmonton, Alberta
Pte. P. E. Labonte, Calgary, Alberta
Cpl. Champeau D-86382 (Given name unknown)
L/Cpl. Hamilton (Given name unknown)

Other soldiers who may have been members of the Regiment:

Bob Paul (possibly from Sudbury, Ontario)
Vic Coleman, Bothwell, ON
Ed McKenzie, Truro, NS
Ray La Polma, Queenston, ON

I would be happy to provide duplicates of these photographs to these veterans or their families. To my knowledge all of the soldiers above survived the war.

Sincerely

Glenn Paulley

I just came across and bookmarked your site. It brought back a lot of good memories. I was in the regiment from 82 to 88 and I'm now serving as a supply technician onboard HMCS Regina. It was good to see pictures of the mortars still in use as I was in the mortar platoon. I was wondering about the "mortar trophie" we purchased while I was there. I wasn't there to see any competitions or it awarded to any teams. Great site.

Dear Sir,
Recently retired from 35 years Police Service, I now find some time to complete several projects I always wanted to. My father Abe Patterson was an internationally known wood carver from the 1920's to the 1960's. Going through some of his old files I find pictures of a carved life sized wooden Indian Chief. Some have military personnel from the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. I gather from the file that this carving became the Regiments mascot?? Is the "Chief" still in existence, and if so, would it be possible to someday see him and perhaps get some pictures?
Thanks in advance for any help.

RE: Michele Holwill's entry on Sept. 17, 2001:

Michele, I hope you get a chance to read this. I tried to e-mail you to let you know that my father John ("Jack" or "Mac") MacKinnon of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, served with your dad Major Jim Fraser, in W.W. II.

My dear dad is absolutely thrilled to know about your father and the fact that he is doing well. I want you and your father to know that Dad remembers your father very well and has always spoken very highly of him.

Although my dad has his share of physical health problems, his mind is still as sharp as can be. Please let your father know that "Jack" remembers him with great admiration and fondness.

I truly hope that your dad is still doing well, Michele.

Sincerely,
Heather MacKinnon (the second-youngest of seven)

Hello,

My father John D. ("Jack" or "Mac") MacKinnon of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, joined the army (on the third try) in 1940 and was a Hasty P., C Company, 13 Platoon. He went to Italy in the latter part of W.W. II, and after going through Holland, he volunteered for the Pacific campaign. Three days out of Halifax after coming home to go to the Pacific war, the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, signifying the beginning of the end of the war.

My dear dad will turn 82-years-old in May. Although he has many physical health problems, his mind is still very sharp, and I enjoy listening to his stories about his days as a Hasty P.

I printed out some information from this web site and presented it to Dad today. His eyes lit up and I could tell that reading the Guest Book entries, etc. was (pleasantly) emotional for him. Dad asked me to post a message for him here in hopes of hearing from any vets in his former platoon who remember him.

Sincerely,
Heather MacKinnon

Dear All

As a member of Darvel Heritage Group we are looking to trace the history of the Hasty pees in WW11.

We are aware of the Regiment being in Darvel, Ayrshire in the early 40s, and having viewed your message in the Regimental Journal, can you supply any Battalion info relating to the Hasty pees stay.

It would be very helpful if you know the battalion number and dates of residence in Darvel. We are hoping to add this detail to a commemorative stone in the town.

Regards and thanking you in advance

Peter Orr.

I wonder if my grandfather was as ready and scared at the same time as I am now. I could sure use some advice from him. I have all his medals mounted and my father who has wrote to you, gave me a picture of him and many others, at a sgt mess dinner that says 'Edmonton Garrison, 1941' underneath. Its good to see a web site that people can go to to learn about our regt.

I have been with the regiment since 1992 and I just recently commissioned from the rank of Sgt. I have two comments: 1) this is an excellent tool for communication with current and former members of the regiment. 2) The Reserves is offering a trial programme of a percentage of reimbursement for current members currently enrolled in college or university. I have just finished reading many guest book entries asking for information on how to obtain copies of military records for fathers and grandfathers who served in WW2. After answering a few by e-mail, I thought I should post the information here, just to make it easier for every one (mostly me). Write to the National Archives of Canada (Ottawa,Canada,K1A 0N3).Ask for the information under the PRIVACY ACT.Explain clearly to them what you want and why you want it. You will be sent a form to fill out. You will also need photo copies of the following information:proof of death (death certificate, obituary notice, etc),proof of relationship (baptismal certificate, marriage certificate or any other document that clearly demonstrates the relationship) and regimental number. Remember at all times, you are dealing with the government. If I can be of any more help to any one then ether leave a posting here or email me.
